About Security Research in the Czech Republic

What is security research?

Security research refers to research, development, and innovation activities aimed at strengthening the security system of the Czech Republic and enhancing the resilience of the country's internal security. It can be understood as a supporting instrument that generates knowledge, technologies, and tools to expand and improve the capabilities of the national security system, particularly those of security and emergency services, as well as other public authorities involved in ensuring national security.

The development of the security research support system and the prioritization of its focus are currently guided by the security research strategy document, approved by Act No. 871/2025.

Security research is of comparable importance at both the European and global levels. Since its inception, it has been one of the priority areas supported under the European Union's Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation.

The Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic is the national authority responsible for security research and serves as the provider of state funding for research and development under Act No. 130/2002. Under this legislation, funding may be provided either as targeted (project-based) or as institutional support.

The coordination of state support for security research is carried out by the Security Research and Development Unit, which is part of the Department of Security Research and Police Education.
